Neuropsychological
Evaluations: We specialize in evaluations for problems
with cognition, memory, brain damage, head injury, tumor, stroke and
other cerebrovascular disorders, epilepsy, M.S., Alzheimer's,
delirium, autoimmune disorders, and toxic exposure.
Competency, functional abilities / level of independence, and
disability referral questions are common.
Legal Evaluations:
Birmingham Neuropsychology, LLC offers a wide variety of assessments
for all of your legal needs. Our trained and friendly staff perform
hundreds of assessments per year, including testing for cognitive
deficits resulting from head injury, dementia, TIA/stroke, seizure,
multiple sclerosis, encephalopathy, toxic exposure, or brain tumor.
We also assess for all major psychiatric disorders, including
depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. Our staff is
trained to assess underlying causes for disability and worker’s
compensation claims, as well as detect any possible malingering on
the part of the client. Our clinic is
well-known in the community as a leading resource for competency
assessments. We can detect dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other
memory deficits that may affect a person’s competency to drive,
handle his or her own finances, make decisions regarding medical
care, and live independently. As you well know, competency is a
leading factor in a person’s ability to legally enter into a
contract or create or amend a will.
Gastrointestinal Psychological
evaluations and treatment: We assess and treat
the array of emotional and behavioral issues that are often found to
be related to gastrointestinal complaints, such as Irritable Bowel
Syndrome. Studies show that a high prevalence of lifetime
psychiatric illness has been found in people with functional
intestinal disorders, and some of these functional syndromes are
often found in some patients with psychiatric illness. These
psychiatric issues may include, but are not limited to: anxiety,
depression, hostility, posttraumatic stress disorder, and family and
life stressors.
Chronic Pain evaluation and
treatment: We assess patients with chronic pain issues for
psychological factors that may be exacerbating pain. We then
help patients better cope with pain through individual and group
psychotherapy and psychiatric medication
management.
Gastric Bypass / Lap Band / Gastric Sleeve Bariatric Surgery
pre-surgical psychological evaluations and treatment:
We assess and treat patients undergoing bariatric procedures, such
as gastric bypass or lap band surgery. Psychological
assessment of patients undergoing this procedure is crucial, as many
patients have undiagnosed psychopathology in this particular
population. Most surgeons require psychological evaluation and
possible treatment, as the success of the procedure may be improved
with this additional component to the entire surgical
plan.
