Specializing in Care for Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease

and Other Memory Disorders

The South Highland Center is a ministry of South Highland Presbyterian Church, one of Birmingham’s most active and community-involved churches for more than 100 years.

Housed in the church’s renovated west wing, our program has been carefully tailored in every aspect to meet the special needs of cognitively impaired individuals from mild to severe phases.

Our staff is comprised of highly skilled professionals, trained specifically in dementia care. Staff members work with small participant groups, ensuring plenty of personalized attention. Participants may attend daily or part-time. Our focus is to promote stimulating, enriching, and fun life experiences in a safe and nurturing home-like environment.

ATTENDEE BENEFITS

Persons with the following conditions may be enriched by regular participation: Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke-related Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntingdon’s Disease, and other dementing illnesses.

DEMENTIA DEFINED

Individuals affected by dementia experience permanent, neurological decline generally characterized by memory loss, confusion, disorientation, intellectual decline, language impairment, and a decreasing ability to engage in activities of daily living.

WHY PARTICIPATE

While there is currently no cure for dementia, taking part in a stimulating day activity program may delay a decline in condition by maximizing remaining abilities and improving the quality of life.

FEES & INSURANCE

As highly-qualified as the South Highland Center is, daily fees for our programs are much more reasonable than one would expect and make care at SHC for your loved one an attractive option. Additionally, the Center is a qualified provider for many insurance programs (except Medicaid).

CAREGIVER BENEFITS

At the South Highland Center, family caregivers are as important to us as our participants. We know that caring for a person with dementia is a 24-hour-a-day job, and we recognize the unique and overwhelming demands of this role.

Affected persons often require assistance with the most basic activities, and even though they may remain physically healthy, they usually cannot be left unattended, even for very short intervals.

That is where The South Highland Center can help. Our affordable program of long-term care offers real relief to devoted caregivers, allowing them to pursue their own careers and personal interests with peace of mind, knowing their loved one is mentally and physically active, happy, and well cared for.
